CINCINNATI —Ryan Dempster’s start Wednesday was in question up to game time, for unknown reasons. But he seemed to get stronger inning by inning in leading the Chicago Cubs to a 4-1 victory over the Reds to snap an eight-game losing streak.
Program changes in Free Rides for Seniors Progam

Beginning Aug. 31, the Free Rides for Seniors Program will end for all participants except those who qualify as low-income seniors. All seniors currently registered for the Seniors Ride Free card will automatically be sent a new card in early August which will allow seniors to continue to ride Pace, Metra and CTA buses and trains at a reduced fare.

Des Plaines will increase the number of taxis in town and offer a new voucher program for seniors and disabled residents who use cabs. The city council Monday approved an array of ordinances affecting taxis. After seeing an influx of license applications from existing companies and new operators due to the soon-to-open Rivers Casino, aldermen froze the license process until July 1 so the city could consult with gaming experts.
