Today I attended the Citi Cubs Kids program at the Inter-American Magnet School in Chicago.  Cubs owner and chairman Tom Ricketts was also there and was gracious enough to give me a few minutes of his time.  What transpired turned out to be more of a conversation than an interview and Mr. Ricketts asked that we keep our baseball conversation off the record.   What I will say is that Ricketts goal is to build a winner and that he has a well-thought out vision of how he wants to do that.  In our short time, I came away impressed with his knowledge of the game.

Kerry Wood on leaving Cubs: ‘I doubt it’

But the iconic Cubs pitcher, who gave general manager Jim Hendry a steep discount to return ‘‘home’’ last winter, has a pretty good idea where he’ll be long-term, if not Aug.  1 — pretty much where he was sitting Thursday at Wrigley Field while speaking during the media launch of his Wood Family charitable foundation.

Tom Ricketts acknowledged his disappointment in the Cubs’ performance thus far, but the team’s chairman did not divulge any plans as the trade deadline looms.

“Obviously we are not happy with the way the season has gone so far. We just haven’t won enough games. We haven’t played good baseball. And that’s tough,” Ricketts told me after addressing a group of students Thursday morning at the Inter-American Magnet School in Chicago.

NC2, the 50/50 joint venture for global truck operations between Navistar and Caterpillar, has named Phil Christman president. Christman replaces Al Saltiel, who rejoins Navistar as chief marketing officer. Christman is a member of NC2’s board of directors. Saltiel had been vp of  marketing for Navistar before beginning a two-year term as NC2 president.

“Phil’s product and industry knowledge and Al’s ability to advance Navistar’s brand strategy make both men well suited for their new roles,” said Daniel C. Ustian, Navistar’s chairman, president & CEO. “During his time at NC2, Al did an outstanding job of introducing Cat and International products and dealers in key markets. He’ll bring bold ideas to our mission of growing Navistar brands globally. Phil’s extensive experience growing our global business makes him the ideal leader to take our JV with Caterpillar to the next level.”
