16-year-old Maddi Bertrand was born with cystic fibrosis. Today, she educates doctors and helps to create greater awareness and raise funding for pediatric diseases:

“Despite the fact that 16-year-old Maddi Bertrand of Wheaton continues to battle against cystic fibrosis, she doesn’t let the disease slow her down or get her down.

In summer 2015, she traveled to Washington D.C. to raise awareness of diseases such as cystic fibrosis and told her story to U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Illinois. She also recently attended a prom at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago as a volunteer to make the patients feel more comfortable. Bertrand has been educating doctors, residents and other caregivers at the hospital on how they can better help patients like her.

She is a member of the hospital’s Kids Advisory Board, a group of kids 12 to 18 years old who are longtime patients and guide many of the hospital’s decisions.”
