14-year old Ryan Karlin, a patient at Lurie Children’s, was chosen to be this year’s Illinois ambassador for the Muscular Dystrophy Association:

“A Naperville teen has been chosen this year’s Illinois ambassador for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Ryan Karlin, a 14-year-old attending Waubonsie High School this fall, presents to groups “a real and raw depiction” of the Duchenne muscular dystrophy he was diagnosed with in April 2008, said April Elashik, executive director of MDA of Chicago.

We work with families that know our mission and attend our clinics and summer camps, and Ryan has done an incredible job,” Elashik said, noting that the teen has made 15 to 20 appearances so far in his role as “lead” ambassador…

Ryan is a wonderfully energetic and pleasant young man, and he’s a regular kid,” Kuntz said. “He has sarcasm and humor, and as an ambassador, he has the opportunity to interact more with adults and make a big impression.”
