Davis, Cubs stifle Yankees before season-best crowd

The largest crowd of the season turned out at Wrigley Field on Friday and saw the Cubs beat the New York Yankees 3-1 in the opener of a three-game series.
The 42,219 in attendance saw Doug Davis shut down the vaunted Yankees’ attack into the eighth inning. Carlos Marmol got the last four outs to earn the save.

Is Wrigley Field a dump, as Peter Gammons and Ozzie Guillen maintained? Not to Yankees manager Joe Girardi, who seemed surprised to hear the term associated with the ballpark.
“I always enjoyed playing here, I enjoyed the day games,” Girardi said. “Maybe I’m different than other people. Thought it was a great place to play. I did. I know a lot of clubs have gone to new ballparks, but there’s something about Wrigley Field that’s truly special. i always enjoyed it.”
