DuPage board picks new vice chairman

The DuPage County Board Tuesday ended a 36-hour spell during which three people at different times held the mostly ceremonial vice chairman’s position.

Board members Tuesday morning reacted to the Sunday night resignation of former vice chairman Pat O’Shea by amending a rule that the post must be held by the member with the highest seniority.

The post is now selected by a majority of the board and the board unanimously elected three-year member John Curran to fill it.

A DuPage County Board member from Naperville who has ideas about streamlining that governing body saw his plans nudged along this week when a key figure on the board stepped down.

Jim Healy, one of three District 5 representatives on the board, wants to resurrect the floor leader position, a job assigned by board vote that was phased out several years ago. He said the vice chairman position, which goes to the board member with the longest tenure, would share duties with the floor leader, and that would address concerns that the latter position had become too powerful.

 

Chicago’s Metra updates ‘quiet car’ program

 With its “quiet car” program now in place system-wide since June 6, Metra plans to add quiet car signage, more onboard quiet-car announcements and automated platform announcements to remind riders about the new program.

“Over the past few weeks, we have been working out some of the issues associated with the release of the system-wide program,” Metra officials said in a prepared statement.

Metra offers quiet cars on all weekday trains arriving in downtown Chicago terminals before 9 a.m. and departing downtown terminals between 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Riders on quiet cars are asked to refrain from talking on cell phones; mute or turn off the sound on electronic devices; keep volume low while listening to music via headsets; and talk quietly during conversations with other riders.
