The Chicago Cubs signed six-time All-Star closer Joe Nathan, adding low-risk, big reward to their bullpen:
Nathan is expected to report to extended spring training in Mesa, Ariz., but could return shortly after the All-Star break.
“It’s always a good strategy,” manager Joe Maddon said of adding more pitching. “I got to know him during the 2009 All-Star Game. He’s a great guy. I was there for his 300th save (with the Rangers).”
The signing of Nathan, who has 377 career saves, comes three months after the Cubs signed Aaron Crow, a former first-round pick of the Royals, to a minor-league deal.”
